The Story of Snowboarding (Full doc)

Postby Masato » Tue Oct 27, 2015 3:31 pm

Hey all

Just stumbled into this, looks cool I'm about to start it for a work shift.

I witnessed the birth of snowboarding first hand. We started in 1987, and where I was none of the ski mountains allowed them. So we used to hike into backcountry, or build stupid jumps where we could. We'd ride down our rooftops, or down carpeted stairs, lol

I was literally among the very first to snowboard legally in Canada. Since then I saw it grow to mainstream. Shortly after that I moved east and stopped riding and have not followed the sport since.

During my highschool years snowboarding was the only thing that kept me sane; my father had been transferred to this hick logging town that I really didn't like, but we did have a choice mountain to ride on so I pretty much lived for that. We'd watch snowboard movies all the time, I even bought a trailer and parked it up at the foot of the mountain one winter so I could stay up there for a few days/week at a time.

Have lots of stories (AMA)... and like video games, feel quite amazed how I was just the right generation to witness the birth of an entirely new mainstream sport/activity from its roots.

Did anyone else watch ski/snowboard/skateboard/surf movies?

It was such a weird genre, we'd become mesmerized by those films and watch over and over again.

Some of them had great soundtracks. I must have watched THIS one 1000 times:

There was something real about them... no script or heavy bias, yet no 'reality-tv' bullshit either. No one made much money off these movies, they were all just done for love imo. You'd get to go traveling around with these pros.

Those movies were like drugs

I've got the snowboard under my feet
I can fly so high I can fall so deep
But who do I see coming up the track
A little green man with a snowboard on his back

saying and now i'm flying like an angel to the sun
my feet are burning and i grab me to another world

We´re the Lords of the boards
You coming around
We´re the Lords of the boards
You coming around

- I disagree, drugs are any substance not secreted for your body, surfind is like a martial art, you learn some movies out, but it's a expression of your body. It's internal, like yoga.

Blue Crush was actually a pretty enjoyable movie

Surfer Dude is my favorite Surf movie though :D

I just finished watching the documentary. Really touching, a lot of memories. I truly miss the mountains, at the end they have a montage of people talking about the sensation of being up in the clean air on the mountain, a feeling of freedom and life.

I cried, lol

They never got snowboard video games right imo...

I was always hunting for a game with no track, no time limits, no points or challenges... no artificial jumps or obstacles... just a massive realistic 3D mountain range where you could drop yourself off and pick your own lines to the bottom.

Never found it. Which is probably a good thing because if I did I'd probably play it too much.

- I think some of them had the option to explore the surrouds, but back in the day that were very feel open world game.
Today they probably have something like this.
