According to the story, they tried to snuff that Jesus guy out, but it just ended up making things worse for them, as their assassination attempt failed and his followers are still strong 2000 years later.
I was gonna post a vid of some spanish guys who actually allow themselves to be crucified (yes - real nails through the hands) in honor of this tradition but it was too gruesome.
