Ugliest + Coolest Languages 4 U?

Postby Masato » Mon Sep 25, 2017 4:53 pm

Hey all

- What languages do you find annoying or 'ugly' to hear?

- What languages do you think sound awesome?

Lets be honest about our lingustic biases! :D

Top 3 Ugliest Languages:

1. French. It always sounds like they are gagging on something or about to puke. SOMETIMES when a pretty woman speaks french it can sound delightful for a while. Men always sound gay.

2. Dutch. My mother is Dutch I have heard plenty. It is one goofy sounding language.

3. German. Its kind of cool, kind of a badass language but for some reason whenever I hear people talking it I just start laughing

Persian doesn't sound too bad to my ears, of course I hear it spoken on the street every day and the speakers are always very friendly to me. Finnic and Turkic languages are not very easy on the ears though, I find. Hungarian too I guess, they're all related.

The Romans commented that Semitic languages tend to be uncouth. While I agree I would also add that they are also well suited for the recitation of poetry. The tonal languages of east Asia all have the tendency to talk very loudly, which sounds unpleasant. Turkic languages I don't think are too bad. The vowel system sounds bizarre but otherewise it sounds fine. The African languages with the clicks is another one that sounds bizarre but not necessarily terrible. If I were to pick 5 ugliest all 5 would be tonal Asian languages spoken by loud old people.

For coolest:
1. Sumerian
2. PIE
3. Akkadian
4. English from around 1300
5. Nova Scotia Gaelic

Vutu added most beautiful so I will too:
1. Latin
2. Spanish
3. Finnish
4. Icelandish
5. Elfdalish

Icelandic is indeed awesome sounding.

I have no idea what Elfdalish is though, lol

Vutu and I agree on Spanish and Japanese, both awesome.

If we are going for dialects/accents I have to say Australian and South African bug the shit out of me, lol. Sound so pompous. I have no trouble with the british accent however unless you're a royal

Jamaican and Scottish/Irish english are always tasty to hear for my ears

Whoa there! How did you arrive at that conclusion?

Yiddish also sounds like shit to me.
