Grappling Fundamentals

Postby robbstar » Fri Mar 17, 2017 9:19 pm

Everyone and anyone who does a bit oh ground work has an inbuilt rule set that they create to navigate the murky waters according to their strengths be them weight, strength, flexibility, Aggression, knowledge, skill, experience etc.

A wee thread to discuss the fundamental concepts of the grappling arts.

1) Control the hips and the head.
2) Never carry your own weight
3) Always scramble
4) Mindset is key

- Grab something. (No romo of course) Don`t let then roll free from you.
Chain takedowns. Chain submissions together. Avoid put your hands on the ground when inside opponent guard.

Spot on edge. I do everything here, my weakness in your list is the chaining submissions. I chain my takedowns like a boss but I struggle with the quick thinking of chaining submissions nowadays. Some of these new kids are so sharp. So quick. It's hard to out speed them. One young lad I role with thinks 15 moves down every chain of possibility (also a national chess player), he is hard to crack.

- Do you practice chaining then together?
If the dude is training with you for a certain time, he already know the way you move, visiting other gyms is a great way to avoid stagnation.

Start thinking a couple of moves ahead of the finishing one.
Start taking care of your fitness. You will think clearer and move smoother whit better stamina.

That is so cool you are into BJJ all this time I never knew. Do you train a lot? casually? how long?

Last night we actually worked on this, teacher was showing 3 different sweep scenarios from guard, and was encouraging us to have all 3 ready to go and mix them up/fake etc according to the opponent's movements. He said he specifically fakes a lot of things and bounces around and the opponent won't know which one he will finally commit to. Very cool, he does it to me in rolls all the time, its hella confusing lol
