Former bantamweight champion Renan Barao will look for redemption at UFC Sao Paulo, when he faces Octagon newcomer Andre Ewell on Sept. 22, the company announced. Combate first reported the news.
Barao (34-6, 1 no-contest), once considered one of the best pound-for-pound fighters in the game, has only won one of his last five UFC fights. A 2016 victory over Philipe Nover is sandwiched by losses to T.J. Dillashaw, Jeremy Stephens, Aljamain Sterling and Brian Kelleher.
Ewell (13-4) is a former CES bantamweight champion who enters the Octagon for the first time riding a four-fight winning streak, capped off by a title win over Dinis Paiva in June. “Mr. Highlight” finished his opponent in 11 of his 13 professional victories.
UFC Sao Paulo currently has 11 bouts officially announced by the company, but the main event has yet to be announced. The Fight Night card takes place at the Ibirapuera gymnasium.
