Plus Murukami Kazanari vs Bart Vale

This event has it all!

- Sad what they did to Vale at Wwe after hewon The Brawl for all. Dude could've had a far bigger career.
I remember Zinoiev. He is got knocked out by Frank Shamrock right?

And that's saying a lot because Saku is my #1 fighter!

Wandy wrecked Saku 3x by superior striking, and I dare say Mo had better standup than Wandy

What a humble guy. Always impressed with his demeanor. Or maybe he just subconsciously makes me think of Gordon from Sesame Street

- Smith was a better striker.

But Wand was good at deensive grappling. He didnt had to fear Saku ground game. I love Coleman, dude was made of rock, and would fight till his body gave up. But he didnt had a submission game to make Smith afraid. Saku was dangerous on the ground.

That was the real breakthrough for kickboxers in big time mma. I had seen that event and was quite optimistic that Smith could beat Coleman at the time.

- You know what Smiths does today? He teachs? Works on another field?

I'm not sure Edge. He might still be involved in the fight game somehow. As far as I know he never left his home city of Seattle.

- Hope he is doing ok. Seemed like a good guy.

I didn't know Vale went to WWE?

Too bad it didn't work out, that was a good spot for him.

He has a copywrite on the word 'shootfighting' believe it or not lol. His mullet won't be forgotten.

*and yes, Shamrock spiked Zinoviev on his head and ended his fighting career.

Notice the cut that forced the stoppage was very slight by modern UFC standards. Today they let the athletes roll around indefinitely in buckets of their own gore. Back then EF had very similar standards to boxing. EF promoter John Peretti joined UFC later on after EF went out of business and brought the standardized weight classes, mandatory rounds and gloves over with him.

Those early UFC events that Peretti produced, UFC Brazil, 17 and 18, were probably the early high water mark for that company imho,. Peretti knew the sport world wide and was a great match maker. Sadly the US cable ban forced a budget crunch and PRIDE cherry picked nearly all of the top fighters from the roster after these events.

In many ways Hume/Paulson was the first modern mma fight between two well rounded, complete fighters. Remember this was 1996 and it was still very much a style vs style sport.

Hume vs Paulson wouldn't have looked out of place on last weekend's card. A landmark fight.
