Lifedrawing With Masato

Postby Masato » Fri May 13, 2016 6:58 pm

Hey all

I used to do tons of lifedrawing in college like 16+ years ago, we drew like 4-5 times a week for 3 years. Really enjoyed it. Then after college I just stopped.

Recently re-inspired, gonna dive back into it. Will post progress here.

Started hosting sessions at my wife's studio

I teach drawing classes to kids/teens there and wanted them to experience lifedrawing so I set up some clothed sessions for them.
Was GREAT fun

I am totally re-inspired.

I am coming up with some cool ideas to help teach this that I've never heard before, looking forward to testing em out next time. Lifedrawing is so weird, most of the students can draw really well, but sit them in front of a model and all of a sudden they can't draw worth a shit, lol. Takes practice to get the eye/hand connection going. Very different that drawing on paper or copying stuff from a book etc.

OK the 4 week session is over.

TONS of fun, I am hooked/can't wait to do more.

The kids all learned tons, mostly how difficult it is, lol

Some of them were really starting to get it. One girl in particular is TOTALLY getting it, her drawings just jumped 1000%, she is drawing really nice and I think only 13 or something. Amazing

Here are some of the kids' work:
Ages maybe 12-14

(Most of these are all FAST... I want to train them to draw quickly, this is how I was taught as an animator. These are all maybe 1-2 minutes at most)

This is an amazing page by a girl maybe 14? She is doing so many things right I am not even sure she's aware of it, lol. Beautiful drawings, this was her first time lifedrawing:

This student was bustin these out on like 30 seconds, her natural sense of proportion and structure are really great:

Some good stuff in this page:

Hard to fit multiple figures on 1 page, this shows a really good control + spatial awareness. Good structure too, proportions all on. Nice work:

Here are some of mine:

I was doing more teaching than drawing, but I got a few poses in...Really just got my feet wet again, I really hope to do more.

In many ways its like Jiu Jitsu, once you start to feel things developing you just wanna go every day and keep playing and building your skills. They cancelled jitz on me today, have to wait till fuckin Monday to train again :(

OK next round began last Wednesday!

I have models booked every week till Jan 11

So stoked. I'm rusty as hell, hope once a week is enough to get a shred of my old groove back
