In Greece there is a town called Tyrnavos which has preserved an ancient fertility festival originally devoted to Dionysus. Phallic imagery is widespread in the festival and this makes it very reminiscent of the Japanese Shinto penis festival that also celebrates fertility. Authorities have always been trying to suppress it, and in the 20th century it was officially banned and practicioners had to celebrate it secretely until 1980 when it was revived:
