Through youtube I've rediscovered Jimmy Wang Yu. A leading man in early kung fu films, he came before Bruce Lee and in my youth I dismissed him as inferior to Lee but having seen many of his films on youtube I've had a reappraisal of this fine actor. He was very prolific, playing the one-armed swordsman, the one armed boxer, the silver spear and many other memorable characters. He had a long prolific career as an actor, producer, screenwriter and director in costumed sword films as well as the first unarmed kung fu films and at his height in the 70s he was the highest paid actor in the martial arts world. He had volatile personal life and you could say he was larger than life. Jackie Chan and others owe him a lot for laying out the groundwork for future action superstars.
