Anyone remember this news story? This wasn't just some random wildlife incident. Someone wanted this symbolism used by the MSM at that time.

Tangled Eagles Rescued After Talons Get Stuck Together (PHOTO)

Ryan GrenobleThe Huffington Post

Double-headed eagles are a common theme on royal crests, having represented everything from the Byzantine emperors to the Russian Empire.

But as wildlife officers in Loudoun County, Va., now know, the regal caricature doesn't represent the reality all that well. Animal services found two bald eagles that had become entangled with one another in a parking lot there earlier this month.

They look less regal and more perturbed. Kind of like the animal equivalent of the "get along shirt."

Interestingly, in 40k the Emperor is said to have worked from behind the scenes through human history, masquerading as countless historical figures to manipulate mankind into reaching its ultimate destiny.

That ultimate destiny being galactic conquest, man's evolution into a psychic race, the destruction of Chaos and the eradication of all forms of religion, esotericism and superstition.

This, however, backfires. Badly. As in at the cost of TRILLIONS OF LIVES. And he ends up becoming a shriveled husk kept alive by a life support machine the size of Kuwait and nourished daily by the souls of a thousand psykers. The lore in 40k is DEEP.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Symphonia_(theology)

Symphonia (Greek: συμφωνία "accord") is a normative theory or concept in Orthodox Christian theological and political thought, especially within the Eastern Roman or Byzantine Empire, which posits that church and state are to complement each other, exhibiting mutual respect with neither institution presuming to dominate the other.

https://orthodoxwiki.org/Double-headed_eagle

The double-headed eagle is the most recognizable symbol of Orthodoxy today (other than the cross) and was the official state symbol of the late Byzantine Empire, symbolising the unity between the Byzantine Orthodox Church and State, which was governed by the principle of Symphonia or Synallelia, that is, a "symphony" between the civil and the ecclesiastical functions of Christian society.

In addition, the heads of the eagle also represent the dual sovereignity of the Byzantine Emperor, with the left head representing Rome (the West) and the right head representing Constantinople (the East). The claws of the eagle hold a cross and an orb (this combination is on the official flag of the Ecumenical Patriarchate today), or in some similar depictions with a sword and an orb.

Just saw this thread now, glad someone got the right answer. Basically the aquila, Latin for eagle, was a holy symbol to the romans, a sign of military might. They always carried a metal aquilla on a staff into battle. With the switch of the capital to Constantinople they got the concept of the "2 Romes" - East and West. The dichotomy was further solidified when the Western half of the empire fell to Germanic invaders while the East remained strong. Rome came to be symbolized not only by the eagle but the double headed eagle regresenting rule over both east and west. When East Europe converted to Orthodoxy the concepts and symbolism of the Roman Empire entered their culture, and Moscow was known as "The Third Rome" with many believing Russia had inherited the duty of Rome to protect Christendom from Muslim invaders, who had conquered the remains of the East Roman Empire(Turkey and the Balkans). The symbol entered Germany because of the Holy Roman Empire - a massive misnomer because it was just a collection of German speaking duchies and princedoms which was neither Roman nor an Empire. If you ask me it wasnt holy either. Once again they were emulating Rome and used their symbols. And as far as I can tell anyone else with the Roman twoheaded aquila imagery either got it from the Germans or the East Euros.

Luigi is the man!!

How would you suppose that it is still so obviously prevalent in Russian politics? As you can see a page back < almost every official shot of Putin in Russia will have a double headed eagle somewhere.

What relevance/meaning do you suppose it would mean for him and his cronies if you asked them? someone is choosing to continue printing this on podiums and papers etc...

Like Germany, Poland, etc it has become a symbol of national and religious identity and thats what the average Russian would tell you. Some might go deeper and talk about Russia as the Third Rome, Im not sure if that idea is considered outdated amoung Russians or not. It was still very much alive during WW1 though when the Russians in their treaty with France and England dictated that should they win the war Russia would be given control of Istanbul. It would have happened if not for the Russian revolution which resulted in Russia's surrender.
