Which roundhouse kick is more dynamic?

Postby JosephDredd » Fri Oct 30, 2015 7:41 am

And feel free to suggest ways to make the kicks look power powerful. I'm trying to accomplish it through depicting the rotational torque of the body instead of relying on speed lines. Once I've figured out a way to depict the movement I want then I'll add speed lines as icing on the cake.

WOW, what a great 1st post!! This is stellar, I am always hoping to gather more artists here to share/discuss our adventures

The first one has more impact, but the second one has more action. You could add a motion-swoosh in the 2nd one and it would look great.

The first one I think the hips are wrong. You have the lower part of the hip as closer to camera, ie; the butt crack is curved upwards. This angle works well for the 2nd pose, but the first pose the torso is not so twisted (we can see part of the chest), so the hips wouldn't be that kinked. Try curving the butt cheeks down instead of up, like this:

That being said I still think your 2nd composition is stronger. Everything is leading the eye towards the face/foot... whereas the 2nd pose my eye keeps getting sucked into the hips/back of the kicker, which is not what you want.

The only thing that is really working with the 2nd pose is the kicker's left arm. Its super dynamic, and comes FORWARD as to create another level of depth.

What if you tried taking the arm of the 2nd image and putting it on the 1st pose?

maybe something like this:

This plan would also cover up/obscure the hips, which is good because that's a difficult/awkward angle to create.

Those are some great suggestions, Masato! Thanks so much! Back to the drawing board.
