Euclides Pereira the true MMA GOAT?

Postby Luigi » Wed Sep 17, 2014 6:33 pm

So this guy Euclides Pereira was an old school Brazilian Vale Tudo guy who went undefeated in a career that spanned from the 60s to the 80s. He holds notable wins over Carlson Gracie and Zuluzinho. Here is a thread from Bullshido that has some good info on him:

http://www.bullshido.net/forums/showthread.php?t=98498

Its really hard to find info on this guy. Why has the world forgotten him? Is he the true GOAT of MMA?

Edge: Do you have any info on this early vale tudo era of mma? Do you know about Euclides?

- Euclides Pereira da cunha is one, of the several oldschooll fighters that people don't know about.
When fighting wasn't a million dollar business, there were already fighters, it's something so old, as the history of the mankind itself.

I don't like the title of the goat, we will have a end, but the time will continue, and several great fighters will rise.

Ivan Gomes, and several others, i know i don't answer your question, since my knowleadge about those man come from magazines.
Several capoeiristas, Judokas, before judo was named judo, pro-wrestlers, several karatekas.
Brazilian vale-tudo has a history so rich, that when i go to sherdog, and some guy says, that martial art don't work, it's a literal pain.:)

Fighters tend to get better with the times, so being a goat is subjetive.
Some man was great at his time, his body is beat, but the memory of his achieements is forever.

- Theres a song from the pro-wrestler MVP that says the day has no memory, that's why man like those are forgotten.
People care about the now, not the yesterday, maybe not the tomorrow:

1, 2 you hear the clock ticking?
Tick-tock, you're about to stop living
Tick-tock, I want you to remember me
Tick-tock, but the day don't have no memory

In a time before internet, before sherdog, isn't surprise that man like Euclides are unknow to the great public.

Looking around the web a bit more, a page on Ivan Gomes claims that Gomes defeated Euclides. However a page on Euclides says he faced Gomes 5 times in 1973-1974 with each fight resulting in a draw(to win a fight you needed to finish them, so there were many draws). I wonder which account is correct?

Edit: Here is Euclides personal account on how it went down. The story about fighting until it was too dark to see is crazy.

Thats one way of doing it(Smith, Fisher, etc.) but it often has to do with lineage(johnson = john's son) or what area they are from(de Gaule = from Gaul). I know this is true in Germanic languages, Celtic languages and French, so I would assume Portuguese is the same. I always assumed it was so and not sure if Im translating this right(Im just basing it on Latin) but does "Da Silva" literally mean "from the forest"? lol

With an awesome name like euclides, he is already the goat.
People say they all want the truth, but when they are confronted with a truth that disagrees with them, they balk at it as if it were an unwanted zombie apocalypse come to destroy civilization.
