Stranded drivers, released inmates and rescues: everything about this Thursday's rains in SC

Water volumes exceeded twice the amount predicted by Civil Defense, leaving six municipalities in an emergency situation and 180 people homeless; see the main occurrences of rain this Thursday (16)

This Thursday (16), the rains in Santa Catarina left damage throughout the state, with water volumes exceeding double that predicted by Civil Defense the previous day. As a result, the population was taken by surprise, with drivers becoming stranded, rescues needing to be carried out, municipalities declaring an emergency situation and even inmates being released due to the risk of damage to the prison structure on the North Coast.

According to a survey by the Civil Defense itself published around 11pm this Thursday, six municipalities have already declared an emergency situation: Balneário Camboriú, Biguaçu, Camboriú, Florianópolis, Governador Celso Ramos and Tijucas.

Furthermore, there are at least 180 homeless people on the North Coast, 100 in Camboriú, 50 in Itapema and 30 in Porto Belo. However, no municipality requested humanitarian support items. No deaths were recorded due to the rains in Santa Catarina this Thursday.

Rain records in Santa Catarina this Thursday

The North Coast recorded the first floods between dawn and early morning, with flooding in several parts of Balneário Camboriú, Camboriú, Itajaí and Navegantes, including the collapse of the ceiling of an apartment in the Center of BC and animals being dragged by the current in the Atlantic Avenue;

In Camboriú, a pregnant woman went into labor and gave birth in the middle of the flood in the morning in Camboriú;

Balneário Camboriú was the first municipality to declare an emergency after rainfall reached almost 180 mm in a few hours. Classes were suspended and shelters were installed in the city;

With 6 thousand houses flooded, neighboring Camboriú also declared an emergency shortly afterwards. At least 100 people were left homeless in the municipality;

Also in the morning, streets were flooded and cars were stranded in nine Itajaí neighborhoods. Also on Thursday, 301 inmates from the semi-open regime were released for seven days from the Canhanduba Prison due to a risk to the structure of the building and the physical integrity of the inmates;

Also on the North Coast, Itapema recorded flooding in four neighborhoods and installed shelters in the morning. At least 50 people are homeless in the city;

In Brusque, landslides and flooding affected the operation of public services during the afternoon. The city recorded 148.6 mm of rain in just a few hours;

In Florianópolis, drains in the Center gave way to the large volume of rain and overflowed, flooding the streets. There were records of people stranded in supermarkets and even drivers who climbed onto the roof of their car to protect themselves from flooding on the highways;

In the continental part of the capital of Santa Catarina, a bus with 15 people overturned on the Via Expressa, but no one was injured. Some city bus lines were suspended;

In the Santo Antônio neighborhood of Lisbon, in Florianópolis, the asphalt of a street collapsed and “swallowed” a car that was passing along the road. The driver had to be rescued with a rope and is doing well;

A family from Joinville that was traveling on SC-401, in the capital of Santa Catarina, had to be rescued from inside the car after being trapped in floodwaters on the highway;

In São José, the Via Expressa and the Calegari viaduct, at the access to the Areias neighborhood, were submerged in water;

In Governador Celso Ramos, families were left stranded and the Military Fire Brigade barracks collapsed due to the force of the rain;

The Military Fire Department activated five task force units specialized in search and rescue in floods and floods to operate in the most affected regions.

Santa Catarina counts 13 cities in emergency and predicts more rain over the weekend

Civil Defense states that 320 people are homeless and 995 are homeless; forecast indicates storms until Monday, with risk of flooding and landslides

After an extremely rainy period in several regions of Santa Catarina, affected residents remain apprehensive about the forecast of more rain over the weekend. The forecast indicates the presence of storms in several regions of the state until Monday (20).

Cities in emergency situation in Santa Catarina

To date, 13 municipalities have declared a State of Emergency due to flooding, landslides and damage to infrastructure. Among them are Balneário Camboriú, Biguaçu, Camboriú, Florianópolis, Gaspar, Governador Celso Ramos, Ilhota, Itapema, Palhoça, Porto Belo, São José, São Pedro de Alcântara and Tijucas.

Biguaçu recorded one of the highest volumes of precipitation, with 434.8 mm of rain in 48 hours, followed by Florianópolis (375.6 mm) and São José (357.1 mm).

According to the State Secretariat for Civil Protection and Defense, 320 people are homeless and 995 are displaced. However, the forecast of new storms for the Santa Catarina coast, which should last until Monday (20), keeps the population on alert.

Civil Defense teams have already sent humanitarian aid to the most affected municipalities, with six of them receiving emergency support. Among the items distributed are drinking water, basic food baskets, cleaning and personal hygiene kits, as well as mattresses and shelters for the homeless.

Forecast indicates more rain over the weekend in SC

After a few moments of sun, the rains over the weekend are expected to intensify the climate instability throughout the afternoon, with showers, isolated thunderstorms, lightning, gusts of wind and possible hail, especially in the coastal regions and adjacent areas.

For Sunday, 19th, and Monday, 20th, the arrival of a cold front brings more intense storms, with a high risk of structural damage due to flooding and flash floods. In areas mapped in yellow, the risk is moderate, while in regions mapped in orange, the risk is high.



Civil Defense advises the population to avoid crossing flooded streets or submerged bridges, and to stay away from hills and slopes due to the risk of landslides.

Additionally, it is important to observe possible signs of danger in surrounding structures, such as trees, leaning posts and cracks in walls. In case of emergency, the agency can be called by calling 199.
