Video games you are playing/want to play
Re: Video games you are playing/want to play
I finished Albert Odyssey, now onto another RPG by Working Design, called Rayearth. This one is an action RPG like Zelda, but you get a party of 3 like a traditional RPG, and the characters are very obviously rip offs of Sailor Moon lol Also, it predates the release of Pokemon and their magic rabbit friend seems like a clear influence on pikachu, if not inspired by the same source.

So like 5 or 6 years ago I played this fucking awesome game called Snatcher. Basically youre a detective in the future. It was made by Kojima before he went on to fame. Turns out he made another game in that style before he hit it big - Policenauts.
I first heard of Policenauts in the late 00s, when either Gametrailers or Screwattack made a top 10 games that need a sequel or rerelease or something. The game was never localized. Snatcher at least got an obscure Sega CD localization, but Policenauts got nothing. That is until 5 or so years ago when hackers made their own and released it on the internet. I downloaded it on my Saturn and all I can say is, wow, it was amazing. The past few days I have played it all night. Its one of those stories that pulls you in and mindfucks you. Similar to Snatcher. The main difference is Snatcher was less linear and had you wandering around a lot more. On the one hand that got annoying sometimes, on the other hand it made Snatcher truly feel like a video game, while Policenauts is an experience halfway between playing a game and watching a movie. When I had to make a decision in Snatcher, it felt like it mattered, at least a little. In Policenauts I simply knew the sequence of every little detail was predetermined, the little freedom you have feels so illusionary. Like, should I bother to think about what might happen next when I know the dungeonmaster is just going to tell me the same thing no matter what?
Also, its seems pretty obvious that right before Kojima wrote the story he watched that Eddie Murphy movie, I think its called Beverly Hills Cop. The two American cop bros solving crime part is an influence, and also there is a plot twist late in the game that mirrors a plot twist in the movie.
Edit: Found the video:
