I think I've drawn... one live person in my life. A stuffed owl. A few other objects.

I've drawn from photographs a fair bit (a great way to learn) and comics quite a lot (horrible way to learn).

Lately I've been working on my perspective work. Cars are so freaking hard to draw.

I think drawing from photos is actually a deceptively dangerous way to learn.

When drawing the figure, its essential to really think of what you are drawing in 3D space, not just on a flat paper. Photographs often warp perspective, things look wonky and we don't know how to visually interpret what we see.

Copying from photographs makes us copy the shapes, not the forms.

There really is no substitute for live figure drawing imo. 2 hours of figure drawing = 1 month of copying photos

Find a club, dude. You will love it

I can see in a lot of your drawings little things like ankles and feet etc where lifedrawing would help improve 100%. Also studying the skeleton and muscles is wonderful. To draw the figure well you must have X-ray eyes! Understand what's under the skin, why it shapes the way it does etc.

I've actually been thinking about this. I've been looking at Meetup groups in my area because I can't really spend a lot of money on classes right now.

Lifedrawing doesn't need to be 'classes'... you don't need a teacher etc (though of course this is valuable)

Most places I've seen its just an open session, people pay just enough to cover the model fees which is much cheaper than taking a full class. Sometimes if its busy enough you can just drop in, pay $15 bucks or whatever and come as you wish

Hey I was rummaging through the junk/furnace room in the basement and I found a stack of my old lifedrawings from college.

I was better then, I really think its about time I get my fix again, been quite a few years I can't even remember

To draw cars well, just simplify them into a box, and make everything work according to the perspective of the box.

I'm doing a lesson like this in my kids class this Saturday, it should go well. I have 6 kids this session (10 weeks) that are all getting pretty fuckin good. Its fun because I've never got to teach any sort of advanced stuff, I was always teaching mostly beginners. But they hired another teacher for the wee ones and I get to take the older/better students. They are rockin man I tell ya.
